Sugar Trail

This tour is a unique experience, a mix of nature and history.
In the morning we leave the centre by bus. Once across the bridge into the Commewijne district, we enter a different atmosphere.

Peperpot

From the Wijdenbosch Bridge we make our first stop at Peperpot, a plantation and nature area along the East–West Link.
There we take a walk through the nature park, accompanied by the guide, who explains everything along the way.
We also visit the Peperpot plantation.

Background information

Then we get back on the bus for a drive of just under half an hour towards Tamanredjo.
Plenty of time to ask the guide all your questions.
On arrival in Tamanredjo we enjoy a Javanese lunch at a good “warung”.

Mariënburg

After lunch we take the bus towards Mariënburg.
We drive via Alkmaar, where you can see lots of small-scale farming along the road.

At Mariënburg you get a guided tour of the former sugar plantation, which is also famous for its rum recipes.
Some remains still stand, but only with the help of the local guide can you form a real picture.
After the tour of about an hour there is a drink and some fruit. If you like, you can walk around a bit more and take photos.

Then we drive to Nieuw Amsterdam, where the guide explains how to visit the open-air museum on your own.

Boat trip

From Nieuw Amsterdam we sail a stretch of the Suriname River to get a view of the beautiful landscape around you.
Then we return to Sidewalk Café ‘t Vat, the end point of this tour.
