Dolphin spotting – sunset and dolphins tour
Spotting the Surinamese dolphin, the profosu, starts at 4:00 pm from a boat departing from Leonsberg.
Ston Island is a two-hour drive from Paramaribo. The story goes that the owner was a gold prospector who once found a lot of gold and used that capital to start the resort. Work on it began in 2006.
Departure times and meeting points can change. If they do, everyone who has booked receives an e-mail straight away.
The reservoir:
In the 1960s about 1,560 square kilometres of tropical rainforest were flooded to supply energy for bauxite processing, creating the Van Blommestein Lake, popularly known as the Brokopondo Reservoir.
This tour is all about sailing on the lake, swimming in it, and its history.
You take a boat trip on the lake, where gnarled petrified tree trunks stick out of the water, and enjoy the beautiful view of the hilly Brownsberg area.
Ston Island:
In the morning we leave Paramaribo along the fully paved road towards Brownsweg.
On the way we stop for a delicious Surinamese snack and a cup of coffee.
The next stop is the checkpoint (where you must be able to show your passport).
In Brownsweg the guide tells you about the transmigration villages and their history, gold mining and logging.
These transmigration villages used to be located in the area that is now covered by the reservoir.
In Brownsweg you get a picture of the Saramaccan way of life, where modern and traditional life blend together.
From Brownsweg it is about another 25 minutes on an unpaved track to Ston Island.
This beautiful resort lies on a peninsula on the Brokopondo Reservoir and is very popular in Suriname, with tourists and locals alike.
Fascinating and typical of the reservoir are the tree stumps that still stand proudly in many places in the lake.
A motorised korjaal trip is on the programme.
For anglers among us, it is a good idea to bring your fishing gear: you can catch various kinds of fish, including tukunari and piranha.
At midday you are served a delicious Surinamese meal, and there is plenty of time to swim and relax.
It is also possible to rent a canoe or kayak on site and take it out on the lake.
Prices are per hour and this can be arranged with the manager at the resort itself.
At the end of the afternoon we head back to Paramaribo.
Every day from 3 people.
