Gunsi

The 3- or 4-day Gunsi tour offers a unique experience in a traditional Surinamese village on the Upper Suriname River.

Description

Gunsi is a quiet village on the Upper Suriname River. Set high on the bank just north of Nieuw Aurora, it offers a unique and unforgettable experience for travellers looking to escape the daily bustle. Gunsi is easy to reach from Atjoni, just an hour by boat, and its location gives it a beautiful panoramic view over the river and the surrounding nature. The nearby tourist camp of Tei Wei adds a special cultural dimension to your stay, as villagers regularly visit the camp, creating a special interaction between the local community and visitors. This makes Gunsi an ideal destination for anyone who wants to experience not only nature but also the local culture and traditions.

Besides its impressive natural beauty, Gunsi offers plenty of opportunities for relaxation and adventure. The Felulasi rapids are a must-see, and if you want to cool off you can sit in the refreshing current for a natural back massage. At low water a sandbank even appears in the middle of the river, where you can relax and enjoy the warm sand. For walkers, Gunsi is an excellent base, as the village is well connected to two other villages upstream by a well-maintained forest path. This lets you explore the area on foot and experience the peace of nature.

Advantages:

  • A quiet, elevated location with a beautiful view over the Upper Suriname River.
  • A unique cultural experience thanks to the nearby Tei Wei tourist camp.
  • The Felulasi rapids offer relaxation and a natural back massage.
  • A sandbank that appears at low water, ideal for relaxing.
  • Good connections to two other villages, excellent for walkers.

Accommodation:

The lodges in Gunsi are set on the edge of the tourist area and offer a beautiful view over the river. There are about ten double huts, each with a small balcony where you can hang your hammock and enjoy the view. The huts are made of wood, which keeps them cooler and means fewer insects. Each hut has a light and a power socket.

Facilities:

  • A shared space for relaxing, reading or playing games.
  • Kitchens and dining areas for shared meals.
  • Well-maintained showers and toilets.

Gunsi offers the perfect balance of adventure, relaxation and culture. Whether you're looking for a quiet place to unwind or a unique experience in Suriname's interior, Gunsi is a destination you won't soon forget.
