Galibi (sea turtles) and French Guiana, 2 or 3 days
Giant sea turtles travel all the way from Africa, via Europe, to Galibi to lay their eggs.
In the west of Suriname, hidden deep in the jungle 300 kilometres from Paramaribo, lie the Blanche Marie Falls. They consist of gigantic basalt rock formations over which the water thunders down.
Departure times and meeting points can change. If they do, everyone who has booked receives an e-mail straight away.
Visit Suriname's great pride, the Blanche Marie Falls, and discover Apoera too!
The Blanche Marie Falls and the largely unspoilt region of West Suriname are among Suriname's greatest treasures.
The Blanche Marie and Apoera tour
The Blanche Marie Falls lie in West Suriname, in the Bakhuis Mountains.
West Suriname is an impressive unspoilt area of forest and savannah with many rivers, creeks, rapids (sulas) and beautiful waterfalls.
After an adventurous trip of about eight hours, mostly over an unpaved bauxite road, you arrive at the foot of the Bakhuis Mountains at Blanche Marie.
Along the way we stop in the Maroon village of Witagron and take a walk there,
so we can see the village properly and meet the residents and their children.
On arrival you can relax and freshen up under the shower or in the Nickerie River,
or take a short forest walk straight to the Blanche Marie Falls!
The imposing Blanche Marie Falls are 10 metres high, stretch over more than 120 metres and lie in high forest, the most beautiful tropical rainforest in Suriname.
The falls look very different depending on the water level, so it makes quite a difference whether you take this tour in the dry season or the rainy season (both seasons have their pros and cons).
The falls carry an enormous volume of water.
In the 19th century Blanche Marie was named after ‘white Marie’, the wife of the expedition leader (and then governor of Suriname) who mapped the falls and the area.
All eight of Suriname's monkey species can be found around the resort, along with more than 200 bird species.
There are also giant otters, tapirs, armadillos, sloths and almost every mammal found in Suriname,
even wild cats, although these are very rarely seen.
In the standard version of this tour you sleep and relax in hammocks in the camps along the Nickerie River.
For an extra charge you can also reserve a room with a bed.
On day 3 we travel on to the far west of Suriname and visit Apoera.
Here we sleep in beds and take in the highlights on a village walk and a drive by car or bus,
such as the Corantijn River and the abandoned, overgrown railway station, linked to a piece of Suriname's history.
We also visit the local indigenous village of Washabo and take a beautiful trip on the Kaboeri creek, where we try to spot giant otters.

On the 3-day French Guiana tour we travel further into the country, to the capital Cayenne and to Kourou, home of the rocket launch base.
Kaieteur Falls on the Potaro River in Essequibo (Guyana) is the world's widest single-drop waterfall.
