Reservoir boat trip, fishing and waterfall

A varied day tour to the Brokopondo Reservoir. Visit the impressive Afobaka dam and hear the story behind the transmigration of the original inhabitants.

Description

Dam, Slammit Falls & Brokopondo Reservoir

Departure and the journey

The tour starts at Sidewalk Café ‘t Vat, where the bus is waiting. We drive towards the Brokopondo district. Along the way we make a short stop to eat a Surinamese sandwich and pick up lunch for later. During the drive the guide tells you about the areas we pass through.

Visit to the dam

The first stop is the Afobaka dam. Here the guide explains the construction of the dam in the 1960s, its electricity production, and how the enormous reservoir was created by flooding the area.

Out on the reservoir and fishing

At the lake we board the boat. We sail out onto the reservoir, between the dead treetops still sticking out of the water. Everyone gets a simple rod for some easy-going fishing for, for example, kubi or piranha.

History of the inhabitants

During the boat trip the guide tells you about the history of the Maroons, the original inhabitants of this area. You learn how dozens of villages had to move because of the rising water (the transmigration) and how their culture has been preserved.

Lunch on an island

We moor at an uninhabited little island in the reservoir. Here we stop to eat the Surinamese lunch we brought along. After eating there is time for a swim in the lake or a rest.

Walk to the Slammit Falls

The boat trip continues to the shore at the foot of the mountain. From there we walk through the forest to the Slammit Falls. At this waterfall you can cool off under the falling water.

Return journey

After the waterfall we walk back to the boat and sail to the mainland. The bus then takes the group back to Paramaribo, where the tour ends at ‘t Vat.
