Dolphins and Caimans

The dolphin tour is one that almost every visitor to Suriname takes, but it becomes even more exciting when we combine it with catching caimans. The boat sails from Leonsberg towards Frederiksdorp.

Description

From Leonsberg your adventure begins by covered boat in search of dolphins; caiman spotting is on the programme after dinner.

The dolphins always travel together, in small groups or even large pods.
Sometimes it takes a while to find them, because at high tide the dolphins can range over a large area.
Our skilled boatman, who is in contact with his fellow boatmen, almost always manages to find them, even when conditions are not ideal.

Once we have had a good look at the dolphins and taken our photos and videos, we sail on against the current up the Commewijne River.
We go ashore at the Johanna en Margaretha plantation in Commewijne.
Here you enjoy a roti meal, an authentic Hindustani dish.

After dinner, as dusk falls, it is time to change if you have brought other clothes and to apply plenty of mosquito gel (there are lots of mosquitoes in the swamp).
Once the boatman has prepared the small boat(s) and everyone is seated comfortably, it is time for the adventure.
You glide low over the water at a fair speed: a real experience and quite exciting!

The boatman uses a pole with a special loop to catch the caimans easily and without hurting them.
He then puts a rubber band around the caiman's jaws so you can safely hold the caiman, and you get the chance to pose together for a photo.
The rubber band is there for your safety and the caiman's (should the caiman wriggle free, it quickly gets the band off in the water so it can survive; it also keeps your fingers safe).

After the caimans, the boat brings us back to the plantation, and from there we continue in the covered boat back to Leonsberg.
We arrive there between 9:00 and 10:00 pm, always depending on the tides.

Please let us know about any dietary requirements in advance so we can take them into account.
Once on site, the food has already been ordered and prepared.
