Celebrating in Suriname: two big events in the spotlight

13 June 2019

A manifestation is an event, gathering or parade.

  • Avondvierdaagse, or walking march

The name Avondvierdaagse (AVD) literally means four days of evening walking. The walk goes through the centre of Paramaribo, and the groups put on fun shows of dance and song for the watching crowds.

The event has existed for 55 years, since 1964.

It's held after Easter in April, when many schools in Suriname are on their Easter holidays, so lots of young people take part.

The AVD is one of the most fun sporting events in Suriname. It's a cultural manifestation: a show of costumes, song, dance and company promotion.

It's organised by the BVSS (Bedrijven Vereniging Sport en Spel), led by its chairman, Mr P.R. Oliveira.

More than 100 groups, as well as individual walkers, take part.

Each day has 2 routes:

  • a route for the juniors and veterans
  • a route for the seniors

Each year also has a different theme and logo. Some themes:

  • ‘55 jari we waka ba’
  • ‘Join the AVD, being fit is great’
  • ‘Healthy living is a choice’

The groups are divided into classes, namely juniors, seniors and veterans, and some groups can win prizes such as the People's Choice award.

Groups such as Tuberoos and Libi Trobi Krioro have taken part several times and won prizes.

People of all ages line the streets waiting for the groups' shows. The hotspots of Telesur and Fernandes are also busy during the march. These hotspots serve as a stop where the groups put on a short show for the public, hoping to attract spectators to join their favourite group the following year. A hotspot also promotes a company or product, handing out all kinds of goodies such as T-shirts, pens and bags to make it more exciting and fun for people.

  • Owru Yari, or New Year's Eve

Owru Yari is one of the most fun and busiest events in Suriname.

The name Owru Yari literally means ‘old year’ (the close of the year). The event is held every year on 31 December in the centre of Paramaribo.

Owru Yari is a party to close the year with friends, family and acquaintances. Tourists come to Suriname specially to experience it.

Most businesses are closed on this day to prepare for the pagara estafette. From 12 noon there's a huge fireworks spectacle in the inner city, the pagara estafette, where kilometre-long strings of firecrackers are set off. For businesses it's a sign that they've closed a successful year and are ready to start the new one.

Before the estafette starts, face masks and earplugs are handed out for people's safety, because the fireworks make a lot of noise and smoke. The fire brigade, police and ambulance services are also present to keep everything safe.

After the pagara estafette the partying begins, with performances by:

  • brass bands
  • live music groups
  • other Surinamese artists performing for the crowds

The party happens in 2 places: first in the centre, then people move on to the after-party at ‘t Vat.

By tradition, Surinamese people want to be home before midnight, so the partying stops around 11:00 pm.

When the clock strikes midnight, fireworks of every size are set off. Afterwards most people eat, dance and celebrate with their families and wish everyone in the neighbourhood a happy new year, or in Sranan: ‘wan bun nyun yari’. The party continues after midnight at various places in Paramaribo.
