Fredberg and Zintete

Available as a 3- or 4-day back-to-basics tour, with nights in hammocks at various small camps and hikes through the forest. Spotting wildlife and enjoying nature are at the heart of this tour, led by expert local guides.

Description

The Fredberg, rediscovered not so long ago by Fred, has become hugely popular in recent years and is certainly one of the most popular tours among interns.
For birdwatchers in particular it is an absolute must, with a chance of seeing the cock-of-the-rock, if it is the season.
Spot wildlife, everything that lives here, with very knowledgeable guides (Fred himself and his family).
You get adventure, natural beauty, magnificent viewpoints and a complete experience.
A back-to-basics feeling, but still with plenty of good guidance.
The literal and figurative highlight of this tour is the night (and sunrise) on top of the Fredberg.

3 days

Itinerary 3 days. The itinerary depends on the weather; it and the times may be adjusted. Parts of the programme are flexible. A special menu is available for vegetarians, provided this is explicitly requested in advance.
  1. Day 1

    By bus and on foot

Departure from Paramaribo after introductions and coffee (time and meeting point sent by e-mail) towards Atjoni. Along the way we stop at the highlights and tell you a bit about them (at Suralco about the former bauxite plant, now closed, further on at Klaaskreek for the checkpoint, and then the transmigration village of Brownsweg). Just before Atjoni you leave the main road and head into the forest to the base camp. Here you find the dormitory by a creek, where you have a hearty lunch before starting the hike to the top of the Fredberg (a 3–4 hour hike through untouched nature). Along the way the focus is on the flora and fauna, which the guide points out and explains. After a fairly tough climb, the moment of reward arrives: there are several viewpoints with stunning views over the vast forest. After dinner the sunset is impressive, and the starry sky on a clear night is magical! (On the mountain there are small hammock camps, an eco shower and an improvised toilet.)
  2. Day 2

    The Fredberg

With a stunning sunrise you hear the forest (below you) wake up. With a cup of tea or coffee it is truly a wonderful sight and sound. After a hearty breakfast there is a forest walk in search of wildlife (cock-of-the-rock, jaguar, sloth, monkeys: in short, everything beautiful on or near our path is explained and spotted by expert eyes). On arrival at the base camp you have lunch and there is a chance to swim in the creek and take a proper shower. Tonight you sleep in a bed, but before that there are various activities such as fishing, a short boat trip and a Tarzan swing (depending on the water level). After dinner you go out with the guide in search of nocturnal animals (caimans, snakes, spiders and night birds). Around the campfire there is time to chat and enjoy the day.
  3. Day 3

    Return journey

After a good breakfast there is time to enjoy the base camp, have another swim and, if there is interest, try to spot some more wildlife with the guide. Then, inevitably, it is time to say goodbye. After lunch at the base camp you travel back to Paramaribo, arriving in the early evening with a truly special experience behind you that you will remember for a long time.
