Raleigh Falls – Voltzberg 4 days
From Witagron we travel upstream on the Coppename River and, after a boat trip through a stunning landscape, reach Fungu Island.
Brownsberg is world-famous as a nature reserve. It is a popular destination, a jungle paradise within easy reach, just a two-hour drive from Paramaribo. The thirteen-kilometre ride up the mountain is an adventure in itself.
Departure times and meeting points can change. If they do, everyone who has booked receives an e-mail straight away.
One of the treasures of Suriname's interior is Brownsberg: a wonderfully beautiful nature park.
You really should not miss this attraction during your stay in Suriname. It is by far our most booked tour and a great introduction to the jungle.
Brownsberg offers a wealth of plant and animal life.
Examples include colourful birds, snakes, monkeys, frogs, sloths, agoutis and peccaries.
All of these animals have been spotted on our tours, and a few times we have even spotted wild cats in this area (very rare).
Of course it is always a matter of luck and there are no guarantees in nature, but it practically never happens that you see nothing.
And then there are the stunning panoramas and views over the forest, the valley and the reservoir.
This tour is definitely one for nature lovers.
The great treasures of Brownsberg are the natural waterfalls on the mountain, where you can cool off wonderfully.
The hikes are beautiful and you can choose the level of intensity on the spot.
Keep in mind that everything you walk down has to be climbed back up again.
But by then you will have had a nice refreshing dip.
The combination with the Ston Island resort on the reservoir, with a view of the foot of Brownsberg, completes this tour.
After your day of exercise you get a day with a bit more relaxation.
Ston Island is an authentic Surinamese resort that is very popular, also with locals. Here you can really enjoy the reservoir, including a boat trip to a small island (only for groups of 6 or more) where we go looking for howler monkeys.
For those who want a little more action, it is possible to go kayaking at Ston Island on your own on the 2nd day.
The focus is on nature, but you also get a good picture of the whole area, with quite a bit of history and background information.
The journey there is already worthwhile, with stops at Suralco and the transmigration village of Brownsweg.
The Brokopondo Reservoir is a lake that was created in the 1960s. At the time, an area of forest roughly the size of the Dutch city of Utrecht was flooded.
This was done to create a dam so that hydroelectric power could be generated.
This energy was used to process bauxite.
Today the reservoir is Suriname's largest source of clean energy and the power goes to the national grid.
The trees that were not cut down create a unique scene.
The itinerary depends on the weather; it and the times may be adjusted.
Parts of the programme are flexible.
A special menu is available for vegetarians, provided this is explicitly requested in advance.
Daily departures possible from 3 people.
From 2 people subject to availability.
