Braamspunt sea turtles night tour
Braamspunt lies on the coast at the mouth of the Suriname River, in the west of the Commewijne district.
Brownsberg is world-famous as a nature reserve. A beautiful day tour! It is a popular destination, a jungle paradise within easy reach, just a two-hour drive from Paramaribo. The ride up the mountain is an adventure in itself.

Brownsberg is a breathtaking nature area of 8,400 hectares. In just one day, after a beautiful drive and an exciting climb up the mountain by 4-wheel drive, you get to know part of the wide range of flora and fauna the Surinamese rainforest has to offer.
Accompanied by the loud roar of howler monkeys and frogs, you hike to idyllic waterfalls and mountain streams and enjoy magnificent views over the tropical rainforest and the Brokopondo reservoir.
The tour departs at 7:30 am from Sidewalk Café ‘t Vat. From there the bus takes you right through the heart of Paramaribo. After 20 minutes we have left the morning traffic behind and continue along the highway to the Javanese restaurant near Suralco. There we have a small breakfast and hear a little about the bauxite mine. After breakfast we continue towards Brownsberg. The bus stops along the way for some background on the transmigration villages of the Saramaccan people. Then we take the unpaved road up the Brownsberg: an adventurous 11-kilometre climb by car. Depending on the state of the road, a 4-wheel drive bus is used. The road up is quite an adventurous ride, especially in the rainy season. At the top of the mountain a phenomenal view of the Brokopondo reservoir awaits you.
After lunch the guide gives you water and a biscuit for the way, and then it is time to start the beautiful hike right through the jungle. The trails are steep and slippery in places, so sturdy shoes are recommended. The guide tells you all about the flora and fauna we come across, such as the Ingipipa tree and the different species of monkeys and insects. The hike goes to the Leo Falls, about a 45-minute walk.
In the dry season there is less water here, or sometimes none at all. In that case you can choose, in consultation with the guide, to go to the second waterfall: the Irene Falls. (In the rainy season you may also visit both falls.) This is about another 45 minutes further down. The waterfall is breathtaking; you can stand underneath it in your swimwear and take beautiful nature photos. Pleasantly cooled down and refreshed, after about 20 minutes we head back to the top of the mountain if you chose the Leo Falls. This is a reasonable climb.
Back at the top we have lunch and enjoy the view a little longer. Then we return towards Paramaribo. You will be back in Paramaribo at around 6:30 pm, possibly as late as 8:00 pm, depending on the guests' walking pace, unforeseen circumstances and the choice of waterfalls.
Included: bottles of water, syrup drink, lunch, guide, entrance fees, soft drinks, transport.
