Commewijne plantations with dolphins

A boat trip through Commewijne visits historic plantations such as Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, Frederiksdorp and Rust & Werk. A highlight is spotting dolphins.

Description

Directly east of Paramaribo, on the other side of the Suriname River, lies the green district of Commewijne. In this oldest cultivated area of Suriname you will find many remains of old sugar, coffee and tobacco plantations.

You can take this tour by boat (bus and bike tours are also available; you can find them in the tour overview). We start the tour at Leonsberg at 9:00 am. From there we board the boat and sail towards Nieuw Amsterdam.

At Nieuw Amsterdam we visit the open-air museum and you get a detailed explanation of the role and history of Nieuw Amsterdam.

We leave Nieuw Amsterdam by boat and head to the Rust en Werk plantation. There a local resident explains what life on the plantation is like.

What makes our tour unique is that lunch is included, unlike with our competitors. You can enjoy a locally prepared meal (Javanese or Hindustani) at the next plantation, Johanna en Margaretha.

After lunch we take a walk on the Frederiksdorp plantation, an originally restored plantation that is absolutely worth a visit. Since 2022 there has also been a story museum here. Although time is short, you can still make a brief visit to this museum in consultation with the guide, at no extra cost.

On the day itself there is a good chance of spotting dolphins from the boat on the Commewijne and Suriname rivers, since we spend the whole day in their habitat.

We also offer the Commewijne tour by bus and by bike, adapted to your wishes. You can request this programme via chat, e-mail, WhatsApp or phone.
