Brownsberg waterfall abseiling & canyoning

The ultimate answer to the traditional Brownsberg trip. Start the day early with a ride in the back of a pickup truck and get ready to abseil down the Leo Falls with professional gear.

Description

Brownsberg abseiling and canyoning

Ready for the real, raw deal? Unlike the standard Brownsberg trip, this is an exclusive, intense, boundary-pushing off-road,

off-path adventure deep in the Surinamese jungle. A day full of adrenaline, untouched nature and action you won't find anywhere else.

The early start & local hospitality

Our adventure starts early. At 6:00 am we meet at Sidewalk Café ‘t Vat in Paramaribo. As the city slowly wakes up, we leave civilisation behind and travel to the village of Brownsberg. On arrival we meet the locals and enjoy a delicious fresh sandwich together to build up the energy we need for what lies ahead.

Up the mountain in the back of a pickup

From the village the adventure really begins. No comfortable bus, but pure adventure: we head up the mountain in the back of a tough pickup truck! Feel the wind in your hair, smell the jungle and enjoy the bumpy ride over the bright red laterite roads up to the top of Brownsberg.

Adrenaline rush: abseiling down the Leo Falls

Shoes laced and focus on, because we go straight for the highlight. We descend to the impressive Leo Falls, but this time not just to look at them. Under professional supervision and with certified, high-quality gear we go abseiling here! Step over the edge, feel the adrenaline rush through your body and drop straight down while the fresh water splashes right past you. This is an unrivalled, exciting thrill that very few people get to experience in the Surinamese jungle.

The secret of the 13 waterfalls (off-path)

After this thrill we leave the beaten track for good. We go completely off-road and off-path through the dense jungle, where nature is in charge. Get ready for a spectacular canyoning trek on which we visit no fewer than 13 hidden waterfalls! You walk, climb and scramble through a setting where time seems to have stood still. You get wet, you get dirty, and you are completely at one with the wilderness. Sometimes the jungle is so dense that our experienced guides have to clear the way with a machete.

The ultimate finish: no walking back up!

The traditional Brownsberg tour always ends with the tough, tiring climb all the way back to the top. Not with us! We hike downhill until we end up in the gold forests at the foot of the mountain. And best of all? Our pickup truck is already waiting for us there. So no gruelling climb back up: just hop into the back of the pickup and relive a legendary day.

Satisfied and with a healthy dose of adrenaline, we return to civilisation. This is a day you simply have to experience yourself to believe!

Packing list

🎒 What to bring

  • Valid passport or ID card
Essential! Along the way we pass a police/military checkpoint where checks are strict. Without valid identification you cannot join. Pack it waterproof in your bag.
  • Good hiking/walking shoes with plenty of grip
For climbing and scrambling on wet, slippery rocks. Bear in mind that these shoes are guaranteed to get soaking wet and muddy during the canyoning! (So no flip-flops or smooth trainers.)
  • Swimwear and a towel
Since you will be abseiling down the waterfall and trekking through 13 different waterfalls, you will be wet for much of the day. Wear your swimwear under your clothes.
  • An extra set of dry clothes and clean shoes
For the journey back in the pickup and bus it is nice to freshen up completely and get dressed in dry clothes. You can safely leave this set in the car.
  • Small (waterproof) backpack
To carry your personal belongings during the hike. A dry bag or a strong bin bag inside your backpack to keep your things dry is highly recommended because of the splashing water.
  • Mosquito repellent (DEET) and sunscreen
Indispensable on any jungle tour to protect yourself against insects and the strong sun during the open rides in the back of the pickup.
  • Your own reusable water bottle
It is important to stay well hydrated during this intense trek. You can refill it during the day.
  • Waterproof camera or a good phone case
You visit beautiful hidden places and go abseiling. Want to take photos? Then bring a 100% waterproof case or an action camera (such as a GoPro) that can take a knock and water.
