Santigron

Santigron is a Maroon village on the Saramacca River.
It is the closest traditional village to Paramaribo (30 km) and has a remarkable history.

Santigron literally means ‘sandy ground’.
The bright white savannah sand of Suriname's old coastal plain is very pleasant and suits your holiday mood.
The village has about 1,750 inhabitants, and although traditional and small-scale, it is taking on more and more urban features because of its location.
This makes it accessible to tourists while still being authentic.

Besides the guided tour and history, there is also a special cultural side.
Local residents perform dances: the Awasa and the Songe (dance of the fish).
Woodcarving also gets special attention on this tour, and there is time for a refreshing dip or to chill in a hammock.
