Why are Raleigh Falls and the Voltzberg a must-do tour?

16 January 2019

In the middle of the Coppename River lies a small island called Fungu Island. It's a special island that forms the gateway to the Central Suriname Nature Reserve. Raleigh Falls is a nature area of the Suriname Nature Conservation Foundation (Stinasu), protected for many animal species, where you can also stay overnight.

From Paramaribo it's a 7-hour trip to Raleigh Falls: 4 hours by bus/car to Witagron, then another 3 hours by boat. In the dry season the boat trip can take 1 to 2 hours longer because the water is low, and guests sometimes have to get out and walk a stretch over the rocks while the guide and boatman push the boat over them.

That makes the experience even more fun for guests, who are very welcome to lend a hand so it all goes a bit faster.

Why visit Raleigh Falls? Here are a few reasons:

  1. Raleigh Falls is a protected nature park, so you'll see many animals: hunting, logging and gold mining are strictly forbidden here. The animals live in peace, which makes spotting them much easier for animal lovers. Species you can find here include monkeys, spiders, snakes, many bird species including the cock-of-the-rock, various insects and iguanas.
  2. Raleigh Falls is also known for its beautiful waterfalls. There are several waterfalls in the area as well as exciting rapids. One of the waterfalls you visit on the tour is the Moedervallen.
  3. When you visit Raleigh Falls you should definitely do the walk to the Voltzberg, a 240-metre-high mountain. For keen climbers it's a great walk, and along the way you enjoy the beauty of nature and all the animals you see.
