ATMs in Suriname? Bringing cash, exchange rates, changing money.
You're coming to Suriname on holiday but don't know how much money to bring or whether it's safe to use ATMs here.
Both are fine: you can come to Suriname with cash, and you can safely withdraw money at the various banks.
The currency used in Suriname is the Surinamese dollar, abbreviated SRD. You can also pay in foreign currency, euros or US dollars, but any change you get back will be in SRD.
If you're bringing cash to Suriname, it's better to change your euros into US dollars, because of the unstable euro exchange rate.
You can change money in Suriname at various exchange offices, known as cambios.
Cambios are businesses where you can change foreign currency into SRD or buy foreign currency (euros or USD). Besides changing to SRD, you can also change euros into USD or vice versa.
The rate isn't the same every day, so always ask what the rate is before you change money at an office, so you know what you'll get.
A few exchange offices you can go to:
- Multi Track Exchange, opposite Hotel Torarica
- Surpost, on Kerkplein
- Western Union, various locations
- Yokohama, on Saramaccastraat
When you withdraw money with your foreign debit or credit card you'll get SRD, but the rate can sometimes be a little lower than at the cambios.
You can withdraw SRD at these banks:
- DSB Bank
- Republic Bank
- Hakrinbank
