Renting a car on holiday gives you freedom, of course.
Although taxis are far from expensive in Suriname, a car can offer some extra freedom. Because of a short British occupation in the past, Suriname drives on the left.
You can reserve a car before your holiday, but you'll usually find better deals locally.
There are all kinds of cars to rent, from a simple 2–4-seater to a super-luxury car. Prices start from €12.50.
The car can be delivered to you on arrival at the airport, or you can collect it from the company.
The categories you can choose from are:
- economy
- sedan
- midsize
- SUV
- minivan
Traffic in Suriname
In Suriname we drive on the left. It's easy to find your way with Google Maps; the only drawback is that new neighbourhoods built in recent years aren't on the maps yet.
There are also very few road signs in Suriname, and no cycle paths for mopeds and bicycles. So drive carefully and keep a good lookout when there's a moped or bike to your left.
Your rental car
Many car rental companies say you can't drive on bauxite (unpaved) roads. If you are allowed to, or want to, they'll recommend a sturdier car that can handle these roads.
There's always assistance available if you break down on the way.
With your rental car you can go wherever you like.
Always ask about the rental terms so you know their policies.
I wouldn't recommend taking your rental car on tours, especially if you don't know Suriname's roads.
For tours, check our tour overview; you're welcome to join one.
Take care on the road, and don't drink and drive.
