Moengo is a small town with a long bauxite history. When the big bauxite company left, little remained for the traditional villagers, including the traditional Aucans, alongside the many other population groups who live there. Located east of Paramaribo, in recent years the town has been coming back to life, partly thanks to the Surinamese company Moengo Minerals, which processes the raw material pimba into cement. The town is also the home village of former jungle commando and parliamentarian Ronnie Brunswijk. Besides the football stadium, there is plenty of space for the artworks of Pinas. Moengo was hit hard by the interior war in the past. You are accompanied by a local resident who gives you a truly cultural tour of Moengo. Moengo is well worth a visit!
Aucan culture
An extremely deep river, the Cottica, runs through Moengo. We sail it in a traditional dugout canoe (korjaal) to the various surrounding villages, where we meet the Aucans, who live in the traditional way.
Moengo & art
Back in Moengo we have lunch, and besides the extensive history you get to see all the works of the various artists. This means a visit to the Contemporary Art Museum Moengo, the museum of modern art, and the Marowijne Art Park with works by national and international artists. We finish with a visit to the craft shop. A wonderful, unforgettable day out in Suriname.
