Apoera ATB Challenge
8 days / 7 nights
Day 1 – Zanderij
We leave Paramaribo early by bus for Zanderij. Here we get on our mountain bikes and start the bike tour that will take us to Apoera. The night is spent in tents by the Kabo creek. (Cycling distance: 66 km)
Day 2 – Witagron
From the Kabo creek we set off early in the morning along the unpaved laterite road to the village of Witagron, where we stay in a simple guesthouse in the Maroon village. (Cycling distance: 70 km)
Day 3 – Camp
Early in the morning we cycle to the first camp, where we pitch our tents. It's a rough ride and protective clothing is needed because of the thorny bushes along the narrow paths. (Cycling distance: 49 km)
Day 4 – Van Ams creek
A tough ride today takes us over hills, through gullies and down descents. We pass the Bakhuis Mountains and timber concessions. At the end of the day we reach our camp by the Van Ams creek, where a hearty meal is served. (Cycling distance: 72 km)
Day 5 – Blanche Marie Falls
By bus we visit the beautiful Blanche Marie Falls. The programme consists of relaxing, swimming and recovering from the past few days. In the late afternoon we return to our camp.
Day 6 – Apoera
Another cycling day, but of a completely different character. This stretch consists of wide roads with more traffic. We start with some tough climbs and finish with a long, straight road that some may find boring. Our finish line is the indigenous village of Apoera, where we sleep in a guesthouse or our own tents, as preferred. (Cycling distance: 63 km)
Day 7 – Nieuw Nickerie
After a village walk we leave by boat for the town of Nieuw Nickerie. The rest of the day is free. We stay in a hotel in the centre.
Day 8 – Bigi Pan – Paramaribo
Early in the morning we visit the Bigi Pan nature reserve, known for its many bird species, including the scarlet ibis. After lunch we return by bus to Paramaribo.
Please note: the programme is always subject to change. In case of extreme rainfall, high water levels or other unforeseen events, the tour may not be able to run (fully) to schedule.
