Backpacking in Suriname

Lonely Planet devotes only a short chapter to Suriname, yet it puts Suriname in its top 8 of special countries. You can't really travel around Suriname in a loop: there are 3 main roads through the country, and all of them basically end at rivers.

  • The East–West Link starts at the French Guiana border at Albina; heading west, you pass Paramaribo. The road ends in Nieuw Nickerie at the border with Guyana.
  • The West road (unpaved bauxite road) from Paramaribo towards Zanderij and Witagron, finally ending in Washabo (near Apoera).
  • The road to Atjoni, into the Upper Suriname area.

backpacking in SurinameSo you always travel there and back. In principle that needn't be a problem. However, Suriname isn't set up for backpackers: in many places people speak only their own local language, and sometimes there's simply no accommodation to sleep in. Quite a challenge, especially if you go deep into the interior. We can help you plan your trip, from accommodation in the interior to the city, so it becomes a successful trip for you. On any budget.
