Embraced by a blanket of warmth
After your flight you land at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport, just outside Paramaribo. The moment you step off the plane you are embraced by a blanket of warmth. And it is not only the temperature that is warm: your first contact with the local people is heartfelt too. Airport staff show you the way, and on the drive to Paramaribo your driver tells you all about Suriname straight away. The official language is Dutch, but many Surinamese also speak English and Sranan Tongo, so you will easily find your way.

Feel at home
After a first walk through Paramaribo, many visitors quickly feel at home. The city is a mix of cultures: Creole, Hindustani, Javanese, Chinese, Indigenous and Maroon influences can be seen, heard and tasted everywhere. There are hardly any high-rise buildings and most historic buildings are made of wood. Nobody is in a hurry; everywhere people enjoy the sunshine and are always up for a chat. Boredom is a word that does not exist in Suriname.

A vibrant city and a swinging melting pot of cultures
Paramaribo is a vibrant city that feels more like a provincial town than a metropolis. The colonial buildings are a feast for the eyes. Paramaribo has a small but wonderful nightlife, and lovers of art and culture can feast their eyes in galleries and open studios. Outside the city there is plenty to experience as well: the still untouched nature is an experience you will not want to miss. The tropical rainforest is one of the five largest on earth.
Whether you are in the heart of the city or deep in the interior, on a large or small budget, looking for luxury or simplicity: Suriname has something for everyone. Hospitality comes first. A warm welcome is guaranteed and goes hand in hand with a delicious meal. So many cultures and so many different dishes make for a wide range of flavours.
